First flown in 1983 with entry into service in 1988, the CN235 was jointly developed by Casa (Spain) and IAe (Indonesia) as a 45 seat regional airliner and military transport. The -100 series is built by CASA (now part of EADS) and is powered by two General Electric CT7-9C turboprops with a maximum cruise speed of 248kt and a service ceiling of 26,000ft. The -MP ‘Persuader’ variant is aimed at military customers and has a range of 850nm at full payload (6,000kg), extended to over 2,300nm with half payload.


The Irish Air Corps took delivery of the its two CASA maritime patrol aircraft, ‘251’ and ‘252’, on 8 December 1994. Equipped with a 360° scanning Litton V5 radar with a range of up to 150nm below the forward fuselage, FLIR, a comprehensive communications and navigation suite and flare and raft launching facilities on the rear loading ramp, the aircraft's primary role is to patrol Irish territorial waters up to 200nm offshore in missions that are 7-9 hours in duration. The crew consists of two pilots and five operators.
